Lunch Colloquia in 2012

18th Lunch Colloquium (8th of the Second Cycle of Lunch Colloquia)

Date: Friday 26th October 2012
Time: 0:15p.m. to 1:00p.m.
Place: Hibari-Lounge, Toyohashi Tech.
Title:

"Plasmonic magneto-optical structures: plasmon-triggered
enhancement of polarization rotation and its peculiarities"

Outline:

In  earlier  works  discussion  on  magnetoplasmonics
revolves around  plasmon-enhanced  magneto-optical
(MO) responses , but  the  question  on  whether  the
observed  enhancement  has  a  non reciprocal  or
reciprocal  origin  has  not  yet  been  enough  discussed .
This  talk  will  illustrate  that  the  plasmonic enhancement
of  Faraday rotation  in  Bi:YIG/Au structures  has  the  reciprocal  nature.
To  understand  the  mechanism  responsible  for  the
enhancement  of  polarization  rotation, the  Faraday
rotation  spectra  of  Bi:YIG/Au  films  were  experimentally
studied  in  the  single-and multi-pass  regimes  for  the
magnetized  and  demagnetized  films.
Experiments showed  that  the  peak  of  the  plasmon-enhanced  Faraday rotation  seen  in  the  single-pass  regime  vanished  from the  spectra  measured  in  the  two-and  multi-pass regime.
Cancellation  of  plasmon  contribution  to  MO response  of  Bi:YIG/Au  illustrates  reciprocity  of plasmonic  magneto-optical  structures.
Calculations supporting  the  above  conclusion  and  demonstrating enhancement  of  polarization  rotation  together  with  its full  conversion  will  be  discussed.

Robotics: From Machine To Human

Outline:

The history of technology says that our society has been changed by a necessity.
Personal Robots have been expected by people for long time, but the feasibility is still unclear.
In this talk I would like to discuss the difficulty, solution, and the
feasibility, with idea of several roboticists.

Title:

Physiological change can be observed using real-time monitoring of reporter gene expression. ~biological live imaging~

Outline:

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2008 was awarded jointly to Dr. Shimomura, Dr. Chalfie

and Dr. Tsien "for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein,GFP".
GFP is such a convenient tool for bio-scientists that it opens the ways to watch biological processes real-time.
Recently, we can observe micro physiological change by time-laps imaging using various bioluminescence and fluorescence reporter gene, luciferase and GFP and so on.

I am going to introduce some techniques of live-imaging and discuss the merit and demerit of them.

Lecturer: Dr.Rika NUMANO, Tenure Track Associate Professor (EIIRIS)
